Showcase of Award-Worthy Desktop Experiences

When done right, a student portal is more than a dashboard—it’s the heartbeat of the digital campus. Today’s best portals don’t just deliver information;  they engage students, centralize essential tools, and personalize access in ways that directly impact student success.

In preparation for the 2026 Appademy Awards, we’re celebrating the universities that raised the bar with their Best Desktop Portal Experience submissions. Each of these campuses delivered something exceptional—whether it was personalization, accessibility, integration, or student engagement—and proved how a portal can transform the daily digital experience.

If you’re evaluating or redesigning your own campus portal, these examples offer concrete inspiration for what’s possible — and you can also explore how Modo Labs helps enable award-caliber portals on our Student Portal page.

Below, we spotlight several institutions whose desktop portals stood out in their Appademy submissions, highlighting the specific strengths — from integration and accessibility to engagement and personalization — that make their portals exemplary. For each, we include (or will include) screenshots, campus links, and a breakdown of what they did well.

Featured Portals & What They Did Best

Below are nine portal implementations recognized for excellence, with emphasis on what made each portal exceptional.

SUNY Plattsburgh

SUNY Plattsburgh submitted its new portal to demonstrate how role-based design can create meaningful, tailored experiences for diverse audiences. Built on Modo with Screen Builder and XModule, the portal serves students, faculty, staff, and Clinton Community College users.

Personalization set SUNY Plattsburgh’s submission apart. Each user–from student to faculty–sees a dashboard curated to their needs, from Brightspace course access and academic calendars for students to leave balances and tools for employees. The new icon-driven design makes navigation intuitive and appealing.

Impact: By streamlining access and personalizing the experience, the portal improved efficiency and reduced confusion, helping every user—whether student or staff—quickly find what they need. The tailored approach made the portal a reliable hub across the extended campus community.

Florida Atlantic University – MYFAU

Florida Atlantic University’s MYFAU portal was designed as a cross-platform solution with a strong focus on desktop usability. The August 2024 update leveraged Modo 4.1 to create a visually appealing and highly functional desktop experience, incorporating multi-column layouts and new UI/UX elements that made the portal easier to build, maintain, and navigate.

Creating an optimized experience was a main priority for the MYFAU’s portal. The “My Dashboard” page gives students quick access to personal info, essential resources, and supplemental items without excessive scrolling, while out-of-the-box UI elements enabled faster development and experimentation.

Impact: Since launch, MYFAU has seen glowing reviews and increased usage across devices, allowing students to find what they need quickly and improving overall satisfaction with the portal experience. In addition, the new screen-building functionality means that maintenance is significantly lighter for staff.

Northern Arizona University

NAUgo serves as Northern Arizona University’s centralized portal for student resources, academics, and services. Designed with a focus on desktop access, NAUgo provides a consistent, user-friendly interface across devices.

User-centered customization is where NAUgo shines. By prioritizing flexible layouts and easy navigation, the portal ensures that students, faculty, and staff can quickly access the tools and information relevant to them.

Impact: The portal has increased engagement across the campus community, streamlining access to essential resources and promoting consistent usage as the go-to hub for daily academic and administrative tasks.

Palm Beach State College – MyPBSC Student Portal

PBSC tackled common student pain points by consolidating multiple platforms (Workday, Canvas, Navigate) into one portal with single sign-on. They built a Favorites section so students can pin their most-used tools, integrated Canvas previews (assignments, announcements), and created a unified schedule that blends classes, advising, and campus events. They also bring in calendar feeds and alert modules.

Unified system access allows MyPBSC to excel among students and staff. By creating a seamless experience between multiple systems, users don’t need to swap between tabs or programs to access valuable information, while “Favorites” allow a personalized experience for each user.

Impact: Page views surged over 349,000 within the first week, and feedback highlights the portal’s convenience, ease of use, and daily utility for new and returning students, setting expectations for continued growth in engagement. Monthly average screen views averaged over 920,000

“The new MyPBSC portal is a much easier way to navigate and find information quickly.”

“I always hated logging into everything … the new way is very convenient.”

Sacramento State – My Sac State Portal

Sacramento State’s redesigned portal, launched May 2024, aimed to improve the delivery of campus services, communication, and overall user experience. The redesign leveraged user research, usability testing, and Modo Campus features to create a dynamic portal tailored to multiple personas.

Student feedback allowed the Sacramento state team to create a on-stop desktop portal that was invaluable to students. They assessed usability through multiple rounds of testing to inform their redesign. Features like single sign-on, a Canvas widget, Google Programmable Search, centralized communications, and dynamic content for each persona provide an intuitive and engaging experience for all users.

Impact: Engagement metrics show increases in average session duration by almost 2 minutes, increased engaged sessions per user, and more overall portal interactions, demonstrating the effectiveness of the redesign in connecting students, faculty, and staff.

University of South Florida – MyUSF

USF reimagined MyUSF to present content tailored by user role (student, faculty, staff). They surfaced schedule info, dining balances, and campus notices directly on the homepage so users don’t keep drilling down. Their My Notices module (via Modo Communicate) pushes key messages without extra navigation. Students can also pin links to favorite apps for faster access.

Personalized access is where MyUSF excels. Features like single sign-on, direct schedule and dining info, and the My Notices module deliver critical information upfront, while customization options allow users to prioritize frequently used applications.

Impact: MyUSF has become the primary starting point for work across campus, streamlining access to applications and enhancing efficiency for students, staff, and faculty. By unifying systems and intelligently surfacing content, MyUSF positions itself as the central hub for campus engagement and workflow.

University of Texas at Austin – MyUT

Key Strengths: Dynamic templates, consistent experience, content strategy

What They Did Well:

MyUT is designed as the official portal and app experience for campus. It integrates SIS, Canvas, athletics, financial tools, and more.  MyUT Austin serves as the official portal and app for students, employees, and guests, centralizing academic information, engagement opportunities, and campus communications. The portal uses a mix of widgets, templates, integrations, and dynamic attributes to personalize content for each user.

Dynamic modules and user-based access is where MyUT Austin excels. They use dynamic attributes (major, job title, classification) to personalize content, and follow a unified design system with templates for navigation, banners, modules, and alerts. The consistent design and branded continuity help users feel confident whether they’re on desktop or mobile. Students can access SIS pages, Canvas, athletic calendars, financial information, schedules, and campus maps—all tailored to their identity and role within the university.

Impact: The redesign has improved navigation, discoverability, and engagement, with 72.3K logged-in visitors and a consistent experience across desktop and mobile, enhancing trust and usability.

Utah Tech University – myUT

What They Did Well:

Utah Tech leveraged focus groups (students and employees) early in the process. They collected input on which individual apps were most used, then consolidated overlapping features into one portal. Navigation is organized around roles, reducing clutter and eliminating the need to bounce between several apps. myUT at Utah Tech University centralizes resources previously spread across multiple applications. The portal was developed using insights from student and employee focus groups to prioritize the most-used features and reduce the need for additional apps.

Centralized resource consolidation is where myUT excels. By integrating over a dozen features from various apps into one portal, the platform reduces confusion and provides intuitive navigation for both students and staff.

Impact / Outcome: The streamlined approach reduced confusion and centralized the campus experience in a way that resonates with users. The portal streamlines campus workflows, eliminates redundant applications, and creates a more efficient, user-friendly experience, encouraging consistent engagement and adoption.

Virginia Commonwealth University – MyVCU Portal

What They Did Well:

VCU submitted MyVCU to showcase how a modern redesign can transform a static, link-heavy site into a thriving digital hub. The myVCU Portal integrates essential campus systems—including Google Workspace, Canvas, and Banner—into a unified, personalized hub that streamlines access to course materials, advising, and other services.

Comprehensive integration is where myVCU excels. The portal’s dynamic home screen adapts to each user, providing immediate access to relevant tools and services, while Google Workspace personalization enhances student identity expression. Instead of navigating a fragmented digital landscape, students now manage course materials, advising information, and campus services in a single, personalized environment.

Impact: The redesign doubled engagement, with 90% of students logging in weekly. MyVCU is now one of the most relied-upon platforms on campus, serving as the daily starting point for academic and administrative tasks. Early metrics suggest the portal is poised to become a central touchpoint for students and staff, reducing system fragmentation and improving the digital campus experience.
